Nullscape Beginner Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Welcome to Nullscape, the roguelike platformer on Roblox with over 60 million visits. This guide will walk you through everything a brand-new player needs to survive, earn Sheckles, and progress through your first runs. Whether you're completely new to roguelikes or just picking up Nullscape, this is your starting point.
What Is Nullscape?
Nullscape is a roguelike platformer where each run is different. You choose a class, navigate procedurally generated levels filled with enemies, collect upgrades from the Mart, and deal with randomized curses that modify difficulty. When you die, you keep your earned Sheckles and permanent upgrades, but your run-specific progress resets — that's the roguelike loop.
The game currently features Patch 5: Doom in Bloom, with 10 classes, 85+ upgrades, 98 curses, 48 greater curses, and 8 altars to discover.
Getting Started: Your First Run
Choosing Your Game Mode
Nullscape offers four difficulty modes:
| Mode | Difficulty | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Easy | Reduced enemy spawns, gentler curses, more forgiving. Best for learning. |
| Standard | Normal | The intended experience. Balanced difficulty and rewards. |
| Extreme | Hard | Tougher enemies, harsher curses, better rewards. |
| Chaos Mode | Variable | Completely random modifiers on top of Standard. Unpredictable and wild. |
New players should start with Casual. Learn the mechanics, understand the enemies, and experiment with upgrades before moving to Standard.
Movement Basics
Movement is everything in Nullscape. Master these fundamentals before worrying about upgrades:
- Walking/Running — Standard movement with WASD or arrow keys.
- Jumping — Spacebar. Timing jumps is critical for avoiding ground-level enemies.
- Crouching — Useful for dodging high attacks and fitting through tight spaces.
- Wall interaction — Some classes (like Grappler with Ninja Belt) can cling to or jump off walls.
The game is a platformer at its core, so platforming skill matters more than raw stats. Practice moving fluidly through levels without stopping.
Your First Enemies: The Husk
The most common enemy you'll meet is the Husk — a slow-moving zombie-like creature. Here's how to deal with them:
- Husks are slow but persistent. They won't catch you if you keep moving.
- Don't stand still. Husks approach steadily and can overwhelm you in groups.
- Jump over them. Most Husks are ground-based and can't follow you onto platforms.
- Learn their detection range. Husks only chase when you enter their aggro radius.
Husks are your training wheels. Once you can consistently avoid them, you're ready for tougher threats.
The Mart: Your Upgrade Shop
The Mart is where you spend Sheckles (the in-game currency) to buy permanent and run-specific upgrades. You'll find Mart stations scattered throughout levels during your runs.
How Mart Shopping Works
- Approach a Mart station during a run to open the shop interface.
- Browse available upgrades. Stock rotates — you won't see every upgrade every time.
- Purchase with Sheckles. Prices vary by upgrade power and rarity.
- Upgrades apply immediately for that run (most are permanent across runs once bought).
Upgrade Priority for Beginners
When you're just starting out, your Sheckles are limited. Spend them wisely in this order:
| Priority | Upgrade | Why It's Essential |
|---|---|---|
| 🥇 First | Adrenaline | Speed boost when detected by enemies. The single best survival tool. |
| 🥈 Second | Double Jump | Extra mid-air jump. Massively improves mobility and escape options. |
| 🥉 Third | Helmet | Reduces damage taken. Lets you survive hits that would otherwise kill you. |
| 4th | Radar | Reveals nearby enemies. Information is power — see threats before they see you. |
| 5th | Shield | Active blocking. One of the few defensive tools in the game. |
This priority order isn't just opinion — Adrenaline and Double Jump together give you the mobility to escape almost any dangerous situation. Helmet gives you a safety net when you inevitably make mistakes.
Best Starter Class: Charger
With 10 classes available, the choice can be overwhelming. For beginners, the answer is simple: play Charger.
Why Charger Is Best for New Players
- Best base movement speed of any class. Speed = survival in a platformer.
- Simple mechanics — no complex abilities to learn or manage.
- Forgiving — the speed advantage gives you more reaction time.
- Scales well — Charger benefits from almost every upgrade in the game.
Class Recommendations by Experience
| Experience Level | Recommended Classes |
|---|---|
| Brand new | Charger only. Learn the game first. |
| 5–10 runs | Charger, Diver — Diver adds versatility once you understand levels. |
| 10–25 runs | Spirit, Grappler — These require more game knowledge but reward skill. |
| 25+ runs | Experiment with all classes. Find what fits your playstyle. |
Understanding Curses
Curses are Nullscape's way of making each run unique. They are modifiers that change the game's difficulty — sometimes helping you, more often making things harder.
How Curses Work
- At the start of each run, you'll be assigned random curses from a pool of 98 regular curses.
- Curses modify gameplay — they might make enemies faster, reduce your vision, change spawn locations, or add environmental hazards.
- Greater Curses (48 total) are enhanced versions that have a more dramatic effect. These appear in harder difficulty modes.
Common Beginner Curses You'll See
| Curse | Effect | How to Handle It |
|---|---|---|
| Nearsightedness | Reduced vision range | Buy Radar upgrade early. Move cautiously. |
| Random Spawn | You spawn in random locations | Be ready for anything. Upgrade mobility first. |
| Muted | Reduced audio cues | Rely on visual enemy detection (Radar helps). |
| Panic | Occasional speed loss | Adrenaline upgrade counters this somewhat. |
| Pixelate | Visual distortion | Annoying but not dangerous. Adapt quickly. |
Don't let curses intimidate you. Part of the roguelike experience is adapting to what the game throws at you. Some curses barely matter if you have the right upgrades.
Your First Goals
Set these milestones for your first few hours:
- Complete one full Casual run — even if you die, try to reach the end.
- Earn 1000 Sheckles total — save up for Adrenaline and Double Jump.
- Survive 10 minutes in a Standard run — proves you've learned the basics.
- Buy your first permanent upgrade — this is when the game really opens up.
- Try a second class — once comfortable, experiment with Diver or Spirit.
