Nullscape How to Play — Core Mechanics Explained
Nullscape combines roguelike progression with platformer action. Understanding the core mechanics is essential before you can build effective strategies. This guide covers every major system in the game: movement, the Mart, upgrades, curses, altars, and Chaos Mode.
Movement System
Movement is the foundation of Nullscape. Every class uses the same base movement controls, but their stats and abilities create different movement styles.
Basic Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| WASD / Arrow Keys | Move left, right, crouch |
| Spacebar | Jump |
| Shift | Sprint (class-dependent) |
| E / Click | Interact (Mart, Altars, items) |
| Mouse | Look direction (in applicable modes) |
Movement Stats by Class
Each class has different base stats for speed, jump height, and special movement:
- Charger — Highest speed, standard jump
- Diver — Good speed, versatile movement options
- Spirit — Average speed, stealth movement
- Grappler — Average speed, grapple mechanic
- Glider — Average speed, glide ability
- Bruiser — Low speed, high durability
- Wanted — Variable speed based on threat level
- Phoon — Momentum-based speed
- Prisoner — Restricted base movement
- Springloaded — Bounce-based movement
Advanced Movement
Upgrades add layers to the base movement system:
- Double Jump — Extra mid-air jump. Universally powerful.
- Ninja Belt — Wall jump off vertical surfaces.
- Grace Wings — Glide after jumps or falls.
- Ice Skates — Enhanced speed and control on ice.
- Grapple Points — Zip-line mechanics for instant repositioning.
Mastering movement is the single most important skill in Nullscape. Practice until navigation feels instinctive.
The Mart — Shopping System
The Mart is your upgrade shop. Found throughout levels during runs, it's where you convert Sheckles into power.
Mart Basics
- Currency: Sheckles (earned from defeating enemies, completing objectives, and finding pickups)
- Locations: Mart stations appear at fixed intervals and after major encounters
- Stock rotation: Each Mart has a random selection of available upgrades — you won't see everything every time
- Prices: Range from cheap utility upgrades to expensive premium items
- Permanent vs. Run-specific: Most upgrades are permanent across runs once purchased. Some are run-only.
How to Shop Effectively
- Check your Sheckles before entering. Know your budget.
- Prioritize core upgrades. Adrenaline, Double Jump, and Helmet should be your first purchases.
- Look for class synergies. Grapple Points on Grappler, Ice Skates on Diver, etc.
- Don't overspend on one run. Save Sheckles for permanent upgrades you'll use forever.
- Business License saves money long-term. Buy it early if you plan to invest heavily.
Economy Tips
- Paycheck provides passive income — the longer your run, the more you earn.
- Medal increases end-of-run rewards — only valuable if you complete runs.
- Gift Magnet lets you collect items from a distance, saving time and reducing risk.
- Fanny Pack increases carry capacity for later-game upgrade stacking.
Upgrade System
Nullscape has over 85 upgrades across multiple categories. Understanding how they interact is key to building effective loadouts.
Upgrade Categories
| Category | Examples | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | Adrenaline, Double Jump, Ice Skates, Grace Wings, Ninja Belt | Movement and positioning |
| Defense | Helmet, Shield, Panic Necklace, Drowned Ægis | Damage mitigation and survival |
| Utility | Radar, Orb, Defuse Kit, Gift Magnet | Information and convenience |
| Economy | Business License, Paycheck, Medal | Sheckle earning and saving |
| Special | Matrix Tetrahedron, Miniature Hourglass, Pocket Bell, Last Robloxian Standing | Unique mechanics |
| Combat | Blossom, Fanny Pack, Larger Grapple Points | Run-specific advantages |
Upgrade Stacking
Most upgrades stack with each other. For example:
- Charger + Adrenaline = detection-triggered speed on top of already-high base speed
- Double Jump + Grace Wings = extra jump followed by glide for maximum aerial coverage
- Grapple Points + Larger Grapple Points = easier and more forgiving grapple chains
Upgrade Priority
For any build, follow this general priority:
- Survival first — Mobility and defense upgrades
- Information second — Radar and utility
- Economy third — Income and discounts
- Special last — Unique mechanics for specific playstyles
Curse System
Curses are modifiers applied at the start of each run that change the game's difficulty and mechanics.
How Curses Work
- Random assignment. Each run gets a random set of curses from a pool of 98 regular curses.
- Stacking. Multiple curses can be active simultaneously, creating unique challenge combinations.
- Difficulty scaling. Harder modes apply more curses. Chaos Mode can stack curses unusually.
- Greater Curses. 48 enhanced curses appear in Extreme and Chaos Mode with dramatically amplified effects.
Curse Categories
Curses generally fall into these categories:
| Type | Examples | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Vision | Nearsightedness, Pixelate, Oblivion | Reduce or distort your view |
| Movement | Panic, Barotrauma | Affect your movement ability |
| Enemy | Ambush, Mass Infection, Doombringer | Change enemy behavior |
| Environment | Bigger Blast, Husk Block, Cheeseware | Alter the level hazards |
| Psychological | Fear, Delusion, Beacon Mirage | Trick or disorient you |
Dealing with Curses
- Identify immediately. Read your active curses at run start and plan accordingly.
- Build to counter. Radar counters vision curses, Adrenaline counters movement curses.
- Play differently. If you have Ambush, play more cautiously. If you have Husk Block, expect slower progression.
- Some combos are brutal. Nearsightedness + Ambush is one of the worst combinations in the game.
Altars
Nullscape features 8 altars scattered through levels. Each altar provides a unique effect when activated.
All 8 Altars
| Altar | Effect | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Altar of Chance | Random positive or negative effect | When feeling lucky or desperate |
| Altar of Chaos | Adds/removes random curses | To reroll bad curse combinations |
| Altar of Echo | Replays or mirrors past events | For strategic information |
| Altar of Passage | Teleports to another location | To skip dangerous sections |
| Altar of Protection | Grants temporary invincibility | Before boss encounters or tough sections |
| Altar of Purgatory | Sacrifice HP for Sheckles | When you have HP to spare and need currency |
| Altar of Purification | Removes one active curse | When a specific curse is ruining your run |
| Altar of Revival | Revives you with partial HP (one-time) | As a safety net for challenging runs |
Altar Strategy
- Altar of Purification is the most valuable altar — removing a devastating curse can save an entire run.
- Altar of Passage is excellent for speed runs — teleport past entire enemy-dense sections.
- Altar of Revival is an insurance policy — activate it early in the run so it's available when needed.
- Altar of Chance is a gamble — only use it when you're ahead and can afford a bad outcome.
Chaos Mode
Chaos Mode is the wild card difficulty option. It combines Standard difficulty with completely random modifiers on top of the normal curse system.
What Makes Chaos Mode Different
- Unpredictable modifiers beyond normal curses — game rules themselves can change
- Greater Curses appear more frequently — harder difficulty modifiers are common
- Unexpected events — environmental changes, enemy behavior shifts, and more
- Higher rewards — successful Chaos runs yield more Sheckles and better completion bonuses
Tips for Chaos Mode
- Build for adaptability. Don't commit to a single strategy — Chaos Mode will force you to change plans.
- Bring defensive upgrades. Helmet and Shield are non-negotiable in Chaos.
- Expect the unexpected. Any assumptions about enemy behavior or level layout can be wrong.
- Cut losses early. Some Chaos combinations are genuinely impossible. Recognize a bad run and move on.
- Best for experienced players. Don't attempt Chaos Mode until you're comfortable in Standard.
Putting It All Together
A successful Nullscape player understands how all these systems interact:
- Movement gets you through levels and away from enemies
- The Mart lets you spend earned Sheckles on upgrades
- Upgrades modify your capabilities and define your build
- Curses create the challenge you must adapt to
- Altars provide powerful one-time effects to turn the tide
- Chaos Mode adds unpredictability for experienced players
Master each system individually, then learn how they combine. That's the path to becoming a Nullscape veteran.
