Greater Curses — Complete Guide

Greater Curses are Nullscape's most powerful and dangerous curse tier. Introduced in Patch 4 and significantly expanded in Doom in Bloom's Patch 5, Greater Curses offer massive bonuses at the cost of severe, run-defining penalties. Managing Greater Curses is a core strategy for experienced players pushing for high scores and Extreme mode completions.

How Greater Curses Work

Greater Curses operate on a different system than standard curses:

  • Pool Size: There are 48 unique Greater Curses in the game as of Patch 5.
  • Acquisition: Greater Curses are offered at special Void Altars found in secret rooms, after defeating elite enemies, and as rare drops from boss encounters.
  • Stacking: You can hold up to 3 Greater Curses simultaneously. Taking a 4th automatically removes the oldest one.
  • Rarity Tiers: Greater Curses come in Common (24), Uncommon (16), and Rare (8) varieties. Rare Greater Curses have the most extreme effects.
  • Run Score: Each Greater Curse active at run completion adds a score multiplier based on its rarity.

When to Use Greater Curses

Take Greater Curses when:

  • You have a build that specifically mitigates the downside
  • You're confident in your skill level for the current difficulty
  • The bonus directly synergizes with your current loadout
  • You're pushing for a high score run and need the multiplier

Avoid Greater Curses when:

  • The downside conflicts with your build's core strategy
  • You're learning a new boss or biome
  • You're already struggling on the current difficulty
  • The penalty affects your team in co-op without their consent
